Ferro Silicon (FeSi)
What is Ferro Silicon?
Ferro Silicon is a ferroalloy composed primarily of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si), typically containing 15% to 90% silicon. It is produced by reducing silica (SiO₂) with coke in the presence of iron at high temperatures in an electric arc furnace. The result is a hard, gray-colored solid with excellent resistance to heat and oxidation.
Applications of Ferro Silicon
Ferro Silicon plays a critical role in various industrial sectors due to its unique properties. Its primary uses include:
-
Steel Manufacturing: Acts as a deoxidizer and alloying element to improve strength, hardness, and elasticity.
-
Cast Iron Production: Enhances fluidity, reduces shrinkage, and improves mechanical properties.
-
Foundries: Used in inoculants and pre-alloys to improve the quality of iron casting.
-
Magnesium Production: Essential in the Pidgeon process for extracting magnesium from dolomite.
-
Welding Rod Production: Helps in stabilizing the arc and enhancing weld quality.
